Last week I did a Facebook Live, where Krystal Hobbs interviewed me as part of a series she’s doing for her company, Reflective Marketing. You can watch the video here, https://www.facebook.com/optimizedinsurance/posts/1473430189340372.
Krystal: Tell us more about yourself and Optimized Insurance.
Craig: I've been in the risk/insurance business for 27 years. I started ClearRisk 10 years ago to provide more accessible and more affordable Risk management software for medium to large enterprise and the public sector. I started Optimized Insurance 3 years ago to create a better insurance broker business model, more similar to tech companies that are lean, innovative, more customer focused, specialized, with deeper expertise.
The retail sales tax on insurance premiums will be payable for new contracts and renewals entered into on or after July 1, 2016. There will be limited retroactivity to April 14, 2016, to impose tax on premature cancellations to address tax avoidance.
The obligation to collect and remit the retail sales tax will rest with the party that bills and collects the premiums, whether the insurer or the broker.
An amendment will be made to the province’s Revenue Administration Act, to enact the tax and to provide that a person or company who maintains a contract of insurance relating to property, risk, peril or events in the province must pay 15% tax on the premium for that insurance.
Charities have a hard time recruiting volunteers and board members. There are lots of possible reasons, but I think a big one is because people are scared.
Like many community-minded people, I have volunteered a lot and served on many Boards. I am currently Chair of one of the largest and oldest Charities in Canada. In many of my board roles I have taken a lead on governance; crafting or revising bylaws, examining board and staff roles looking for areas of improvement, looking at potential risks to the organizations and finding solutions, exploring the various board and volunteer fiduciary responsibilities and generally looking for ways to better govern the organizations for better success.
